My past body (a Canon Rebel XS) broke, and it’s time for an upgrade. Keep in mind that it wasn’t a physical error, but a firmware error that brought the downfall of my body, so I am not specifically targeting a body for its durability. I tend to take pretty good care of my equipment, so that isn’t too much of a problem. Hahah.
Also, I do not have many lenses (only the kit lens), but I am fairly stubborn about sticking with Canon because I have a lot of friends who use Canon, ergo making life easier when I need to borrow a lens, etc.
Anyway, I am currently debating between the Canon 60D (600 USD), 7D (800-900 USD on Craigslist), 5D Mark 2 (1400 USD or so on Craigslist), and the 6D (1800 USD or so).
I am aware that the 5D and the 6D are both full frame cameras, thus changing my essential focal length on the lenses I will buy. I also know I will end up buying both the 24-105 f/4 L and the 50mm f/1.8 II lenses.
My main photography includes school sports photography, portraits, photoshoots, and street photography. The basic concerns that rise before me while I pick a body are A) whether to go full frame or crop and B) which body to choose once I have figured out whether I prefer full frame or crop.
One of the biggest problems with going with a crop body is that the 50mm f/1.8, which tends to be a great walkaround lens for most photographers with a full frame sensor, becomes fairly useless as a street photography lens with a 1.6x sensor. Another problem is that at higher ISO’s, crop bodies tend to have more noise than do full frame bodies.
On the flipside, the full frame bodies are both more expensive, and change the focal length on the longer scope of things. In simpler terms, the 24-105 L will suddenly be unable to reach as far as it used to while shooting sports photography on a full frame body.
Anyway, any opinion would be greatly valued as I need to order a body in around two days. If possible, please state both why either full frame or crop is better for my situation and also why one body outperforms the other. Please do keep in mind the cost of said bodies. Thanks a lot in advance!
